NERVOUS TISSUE:

Nervous tissue is responsible for the rapid communication that occurs throughout body.

The two main cell types found in nervous tissue are the neurons and the neuroglia.

Neurons are highly specialized cells that receive stimuli and conduct waves of excitability throughout nervous tissue. Notice the elongated cell processes and the "kite-like" shape of the neurons in this picture:

 

Neuroglia translates generally to "nerve glue". These are support cells which protect, support, and insulate neurons. This image shows astrocytes, which are star-shaped neuroglial cells. This type of neuroglial cell works with blood vessels to make up the barrier between general blood circulation and the brain:
